Steven Spielberg has refuted Emily Blunt’s claim that he suggested using AI for a scene in his new sci-fi film, Disclosure Day, where she speaks an alien language, stating he would “never use AI” and would have opted for traditional sound design methods.
Blunt had previously told Entertainment Tonight and reiterated on Hot Ones that Spielberg offered AI as an option, but she preferred to create the ‘weird noises’ herself, using microphones placed at her mouth and throat to capture unique sounds.
Spielberg praised his film’s sound designer, Gary Rydstrom, stating Rydstrom would have found a solution if Blunt couldn’t produce the sounds organically, highlighting his preference for human creativity over artificial intelligence.
The article notes varying opinions among other prominent directors regarding AI in creative industries, with Peter Jackson suggesting AI-generated characters should be eligible for awards, Guillermo Del Toro expressing strong opposition and Martin Scorsese finding AI “creatively freeing” for pre-production storyboarding.
Scorsese’s comments about using AI for storyboarding drew significant criticism from artists like Karla Ortiz and Samuel Deats, who accused him of undermining the livelihoods of storyboard artists and using his influence to promote technology potentially trained on stolen work.
