What is lasting happiness? Mingyur Rinpoche starts with the ordinary kind. Drink a coffee and you feel happy for a while, and then it fades. Win the lottery and you might be happy for a few years, though nowadays, he notes, they say a few months. Marriage, fame, power, money. Whatever you get, this kind of happiness may not last. Lasting happiness, in his teaching, comes with contentment, joy, a kind of warmth, a sense of completeness. And the reason it matters is what he calls real suffering. Not pain, but dissatisfaction, incompleteness, hollowness, insecurity, the feeling that something is missing. That feeling can coexist with the coffee. It can coexist with winning the lottery. You can have everything and still feel hollow inside, never satisfied or joyful at a deeper level. The way through, he says, is the ancient practice of connecting with our innate quality, with awareness, with love and compassion, with wisdom. And he is honest about how it begins. Coffee gets you high in five minutes. Practice, at the start, can feel boring. But eventually something deeper arrives. You feel that something is right. Contentment and joy. The hollow disappears. A sense of completeness. You might feel, he says, that you are coming home. And because this happiness comes from connecting with what is already within you rather than from external conditions, it does not depend on anything outside you. That, he says, is lasting happiness.
