Why Taking Care of Others Is What Brings You Back to Yourself | Simon Sinek

Orgo-Life the new way to the future

There is an entire section in every bookshop called self-help, Simon Sinek points out, and no section called help others. That, he says, is the imbalance at the heart of so much of what we are struggling with. We have over-indexed on taking care of ourselves, how can I find love, how can I find the perfect job, how can I be present, me, me, me, and forgotten the value of service. But here is the paradox he draws out in this conversation. When you commit to taking care of the people around you, it does not just restore your own mental health and bring you joy. It actually helps you solve the very problem you were chasing for yourself. If you are looking for love, helping someone else find love moves you closer to your own. And this is not unprecedented. Alcoholics Anonymous knows it. Most people know the first step, admit you have a problem. But AA understands that if you master the first eleven steps and not the twelfth, you are likely to relapse. The twelfth step is to help another alcoholic. The twelfth step is service, and it is the one that keeps you sober. We are social animals, Simon reminds us. Alone in the woods, he jokes, he is a goner, he would not know which tree to eat. But put him in a group and any problem becomes solvable. The catch is that we have to be individuals and members of groups at all times, and that balance has gotten badly lopsided. He remains an optimist, though not a naive one. He imagines a world where these human skills are taught in schools and workplaces, where mental health is something we know how to address, where loneliness and rising suicide rates begin to turn around because people finally feel that someone has their back. The younger generation, he notes, already wants these skills. In twenty years they will carry them into workplaces, into parenting, and eventually into politics, where someone will start talking about service again, and flip the me back to the we.
