If COVID was the great reckoning, Simon Sinek suggests we are now in the middle of the great re-evaluation, questioning our work, our relationships, our families, and ourselves, without knowing yet where we will land. In this conversation he explores what that reckoning has stirred up, and why it may be healthier in the long run. He is candid about his own version of it. He thought he was determining the speed of his hamster wheel, but realised he was just running to keep up. When everything stopped, he got off, and had to ask whether he even wanted back on, and at what pace. It is a question he says he is still living. And he names a trap many of us know well: we will admit we are not happy, admit we are bored, admit something has become too easy, and stay anyway, because it is going well and we are afraid to upset the apple cart. Younger generations, he notes, are far more willing to question all of this, and there is something older generations can learn from them. What makes this moment workable, Sinek argues, comes down to one skill. Conversations that were once uncomfortable or off-limits are now happening openly, at work and at home, and they are testing people. The first lesson of good listening, he says, is to replace judgment with curiosity. You do not have to agree, and you do not have to change your own life because someone else lives differently, but you do have to be curious. And because change is frightening, the thing that gives us the courage to face it is each other. The better the quality of our relationships, the more change we can handle, because someone who does not judge us becomes the sounding board that lets us stay open. The hardest part, he admits, is accountability, looking back and owning the role we played in our own failed relationships and struggles.
