Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayWestern Greece is facing widespread destruction after torrential rains triggered severe flooding, landslides, and massive disruptions across Epirus, the Ionian Islands, and parts of Thessaly. Emergency crews are conducting ongoing rescue operations as multiple regions remain under a state of emergency.
Intense rainfall has inundated Philippiada, where streets have turned into rivers and the municipal stadium has become a mud-filled lake. The road between Old and New Philippiada has been cut off, while EMAK rescue teams continue extracting residents trapped in flooded homes.
Authorities have closed the "Tsitos" bridge due to dangerous water levels. In Aspropotamos, landslides have severed roads and left several areas without power.
The Hellenic Fire Service received 367 emergency calls between Friday morning and 4:30 p.m. for water pumping, fallen trees, and assistance operations.
- Ionian Islands (mainly Corfu): 180 calls, 18 water pump-outs, 7 tree removals
- Epirus: 187 calls, including 30 pump-outs, 17 tree removals, and 3 rescue assists
Corfu: Landslides, Collapsed House, Widespread Damage
Corfu suffered extensive landslides, particularly in Karousades, where the landscape now resembles a disaster zone. A house was buried under debris, roads are impassable, and even the local police station has been cut off. Damage was also recorded at the island's main cemetery, where cypress trees were uprooted.
The Mayor of North Corfu described the situation as a "biblical disaster," reporting over 220mm of rainfall in just 35 minutes and major destruction across half of the municipality's villages.
Emergency Alerts and Warnings
The national emergency line 112 sounded across Ioannina, Arta, Preveza, Thesprotia, and Meteora urging residents to stay indoors. Following a decision by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, the municipalities of Zagori, Filiates, and Ziros have been declared in a state of emergency.
Road Closures and Travel Restrictions
The Kozani - Larisa national road has been closed from the 45th to the 51st kilometre due to dangerous conditions. Police authorities in Grevena, Kastoria, Kozani, and Florina have mandated snow chains or equivalent traction devices for all vehicles without winter tires across their entire road networks.
Thesprotia: Fields Turn Into Lakes
Wide expanses in the Filiates municipality have been submerged, with locals describing scenes of total devastation. Approximately 60 excavation machines are currently working to clear blocked mountain and regional roads.
Kalabaka and Aspropotamos: Swollen Rivers and Washed-Out Roads
Mountain villages in Kalabaka are experiencing severe impacts, with swollen streams and debris-choked roads. Authorities in Thessaly have ordered immediate road closures in several sections of the regional network due to flooding, landslides, and unsafe conditions.
