Actor Richard Gere recently traveled to Germany, where he voiced his criticisms of the United States amidst a crackdown on illegal immigration led by the Trump administration. Speaking at an event organized by the Hertie School Centre for Fundamental Rights and The Gere Foundation, Gere questioned his audience of foreigners with a provocative inquiry: “Did you ever imagine that someone as crazy as this would be President of the United States?” This rhetorical flourish encapsulates his disdain for the current political climate.

During this talk, Gere took aim at the terminology used by the U.S. government, particularly the word “aliens,” which he linked to a more hostile time in American history. “Aliens, that’s the latest. It had been vermin, now it’s aliens,” he remarked, as reported by Breitbart News. However, Gere’s stance appears misinformed. The term “alien” has served as a legal designation for non-citizens since the Naturalization Act of 1790, establishing its roots long before the present administration took office. This historical oversight on Gere’s part highlights a disconnect between the actor’s position and the facts on the ground.

More troubling for Gere, he later expressed feelings of “deep shame” regarding the terminology employed by U.S. lawmakers. His comments suggested that this language is a recent phenomenon, creating a false narrative about the treatment of immigrants in modern America. He also expressed concern about the perception of migrants as being “in another category of human beings,” implying that their hopes and fears are somehow less valid than those of citizens.

Gere went on to weave a personal narrative, connecting his family’s immigration story to the overarching theme of migration. He invoked the Mayflower, claiming ancestral ties that date back to the earliest settlers of America. “So, we all left and our parents left, our grandparents, to make a journey in search of safety, of opportunity, dignity, or simply to look for a better future,” he stated. Such historical analogies, while poignant, overlook the complexities of today’s immigration challenges.

This pattern of rhetoric is not new for Gere. His critical remarks about Donald Trump have persisted for years. Just recently, he referred to the President as a “maniac” during a speech in Norway, further solidifying his position as an outspoken critic. His comparison of migrant detention facilities in the U.S. to Nazi concentration camps during an address in Oslo showcased a troubling tendency to draw extreme parallels. “We have to see the cues — this dictatorship of the monsters — how quickly it happens,” he asserted, a statement laden with dramatic implications.

In summary, while Richard Gere’s passion for humanitarian issues is evident, the factual inaccuracies in his assessments cast a shadow over his credibility. His beliefs reflect a common narrative within certain circles that overlooks the legal history and complexities of immigration. The actor’s perspectives may resonate with some, but it is essential to approach such assertions with a critical eye, recognizing the distinction between personal opinions and historical realities.
