RE: Rescind the Climate Emergency and initiate a Value for Money Audit!
PLEASE MAKE THIS COMMUNICATION A MATTER OF PUBLIC RECORD
On April 7, 2026, a research paper was released by Van Vuuren et al. (Vital 26). Although it has not garnered media attention, this is a landmark paper. It eliminates the RCP 8.5 extreme climate model as put forth by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This matters because it has been the model used for years to set climate policy of banks, institutions, and governments at all levels, including Calgary.
Climate policy analyst, Roger Pielke, Jr summarises the paper and states the following in his article entitled, RCP 8.5 Is Officially Dead, “The new framework has eliminated the most extreme scenarios that have dominated climate research over much of the past several decades — specifically, RCP8.5, SSP5-8.5, and SSP3-7.0. This is an absolutely huge development in climate science which will have lasting impacts across research and policy.”
He also states, “What matters today is that the group with official responsibility for developing climate scenarios for the IPCC and broader research community has now admitted that the scenarios that have dominated climate research, assessment, and policy during the past two cycles of the IPCC assessment process are implausible: They describe impossible futures.”
Why does this matter?
The Calgary Climate Strategy: Pathways to 2050 is based on this “implausible” scenario. It is baked into all aspects of the city. On page 2, it states, “All the actions identified are priority actions necessary for Calgary to achieve net zero by 2050 and become a climate-resilient city. All the actions are either underway or, with adequate funding, can be implemented immediately. Implementation of new actions and progress on existing actions will continue as The City integrates climate action across the corporation.”
On May 26, 2026 Calgary City Council will debate the following motions: 9.4.7 – Rescinding the climate emergency declaration, value for money audit and climate strategy spending (Councillor Chabot) and 9.4.10 – Rescinding the Climate Emergency (Councillor Chabot and Johnston)
The citizens of Calgary were blindsided with the climate emergency declaration in November, 2021. It’s time to stop the waste of tax payers’ money on an “implausible” goal of “net zero”. Do the brave “first in Canada” step of rescinding the climate emergency and stopping the money drain.
Vote “yes” to motions 9.4.7 and 9.4.10 and rescind the “climate emergency” and initiate a value for money audit.
Sincerely,
