Tucker Carlson wrongly predicted President Donald Trump would declare war against Venezuela in his speech on Wednesday.

The president belched lies about the economy and attacked the Biden administration ― but, nope, no Venezuela.

The former Fox News host took a ribbing and prompted some conspiracy theories.

Amid the backdrop of the Trump administration ratcheting up legally questionable attacks on alleged drug-smuggling boats from Venezuela while even seizing a Venezuelan oil tanker, Carlson said he got a tip.

“Here’s what I know so far, which is that members of Congress were briefed yesterday that a war is coming and it’ll be announced in the address to the nation tonight at 9 o’clock by the president,” Carlson told Andrew Napolitano on the “Judging Freedom” podcast. “Who knows, by the way, if that will actually happen. I don’t know, and I never want to overstate what I know, which is pretty limited in general, but a member of Congress told me that this morning.”

Nice try on the hedge, but he still gave the rather bold report.

At least one U.S. senator appeared to catch wind of the scuttlebutt.

“Well at least @potus didn’t announce we are going to war in Venezuela,” Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “No clue what was the purpose of the speech.”

Others aimed taunts directly at Carlson.

“Imagine being this wrong,” one MAGA supporter wrote with a video of Carlson making his claim.

“So much for the brilliant Tucker Carlson,” another person cracked.

Another summed up Carlson’s embarrassment with a Homer Simpson meme.

Meanwhile, others saw something more in Carlson’s incorrect report.

There were several posts suggesting a purposeful disinformation campaign, from Trump or his allies, was afoot.

“President Trump masterfully orchestrated the mother of all head fakes, using Tucker Carlson either knowingly or unknowingly to say a war in Venezuela was coming,” one commenter surmised. “He cleverly tricked every major news network into airing a comprehensive recap of his impressive first-year accomplishments during prime time. ... He truly is the KING of trolls, cementing his status as the most astute and effective media manipulator to ever occupy the Oval Office.”

Former HuffPost staffer Ryan Grim of Drop Site News offered another possibility:

“So Trump must have decided against whatever insanity he was planning on announcing? That the only explanation?”

Tucker Carlson's report that Donald Trump would declare war on Venezuela during his speech never came to pass.
