TORONTO, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding the Toronto Police Service for refusing to participate in the federal government’s gun confiscation program.

“The Toronto Police are right to reject Prime Minister Mark Carney’s expensive and pointless gun confiscation,” said Noah Jarvis, CTF Ontario Director. “Toronto taxpayers are glad that their police service will be focusing on enforcing the law rather than burning money trying to seize firearms from hunters and athletes.”

Toronto police reportedly told Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree it will not be participating in the federal government’s gun confiscation program.

The Toronto Police Association has called the federal government’s gun confiscation scheme “ineffective” and that Carney and Anandasangaree are “wasting taxpayer dollars.”

“I can’t think of a time when a legal gun has been used in a crime in this city, not one,” said Clayton Campbell, president of the Toronto Police Association.

The federal gun confiscation only targets firearms owned by legal and licenced gun owners like sports shooters and hunters.

A recent poll from Leger found a majority of Ontarians agree with the Toronto Police Association that money would be better spent on law enforcement rather than confiscating guns from licenced firearm owners.

“Taking away guns from law-abiding and licenced firearms owners isn’t going to make the streets of Toronto safer,” said Jarvis “Ontarians know the government should be targeting criminals with illegally obtained firearms, not everyday sport shooters and hunters.

“Now, Ford needs to stand up for taxpayers and pass legislation to stop the gun confiscation like Saskatchewan and Alberta.”
