Over 80% of Americans surveyed said they had had some kind of religious or spiritual experience in their lives. The reason it seems rare, Adyashanti says, is that we do not talk about it. We have not valued it the way it could be valued. And one of the most important things anyone can do for spiritual awakening is simply to help people believe it is possible for them. In this conversation, Adya shares what he has found actually works for awakening: a combination of soft, opening meditation and dynamic inquiry. The yin and the yang. One without the other either lacks spark or becomes too heady. Together they create something genuinely powerful. He then offers three directions for anyone on a spiritual path right now. Value the light in you, whatever that means for you specifically. Keep questioning your assumptions, especially the ones that diminish others. And when you feel overwhelmed by the state of the world, do not just reach for the big movements and the big causes. Turn to the person next to you in the grocery aisle and ask how they are doing. He did this once with a stranger who was pushing her cart in anguish. Three minutes later she said: thanks for asking. He says he is still surprised by how often genuine connection has that effect.
