Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwaySen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) on Tuesday said Donald Trump should know better than to encourage violence against lawmakers, calling him “singularly unqualified” for the presidency. (Watch the video below.)
Kelly, an ex-Navy pilot, and other Democrats appeared to be initially threatened with execution by Trump, who boosted a post about hanging as a means. Kelly is now being investigated by the Pentagon for a possible court-martial. All over a video he and other congresspeople of military and intelligence background issued to remind service members they can refuse illegal orders.
Trump’s severe rhetoric has wreaked havoc in the senator’s life and that of his wife, former Rep. Gabby Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt, Kelly said.
The president’s apparent hypocrisy is playing a giant role, he suggested.
Kelly has been vocal about standing up to the president and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, but on Erin Burnett’s “OutFront” on CNN, he tried to appeal to Trump’s humanity and the president’s own experience with political violence.
“We get more threats now in a single day than we would get in months,” Kelly said. “And they’re graphic. They’re violent. They’re not only against me, but they’re against Gabby. And we’re no strangers to political violence. She was shot in the head, meeting with her constituents, and Donald Trump was nearly assassinated. He should know. And he called out political violent rhetoric and said it should stop. And he didn’t even make it to Thanksgiving before he’s calling for us to be hanged. Have we ever heard a president of the United States calling for the execution of members of Congress?”
Trump tried to walk back his “punishable by death” remarks but their effect has echoed, Kelly suggested. Meanwhile, experts have questioned the legitimacy of the administration’s claims that Kelly has broken military law.
“We can’t normalize this,” Kelly continued. “That’s one of the problems here, is that Donald Trump is so singularly unqualified for this job as president of the United States. And the things he says is so ridiculous, people are starting to get comfortable with it. And he does it for a reason. He wants to shut people up, but he’s not going to shut me up.”
Kelly advised the president and his cohorts “to focus on the things that matter for the American people.”
“You know ... the cost of health care and groceries, the things that are affecting everyday Americans that they need some help with.”
