Democratic lawmakers, officials and state governors quickly decried President Donald Trump’s executive order on Monday, which called for the creation of a nationwide list of verified eligible voters.
“Trump’s executive order is not about securing our elections — it’s about silencing the voices of millions of Americans. This is executive overreach, plain and simple. The Constitution is clear: Only Congress and the states have the power to set election rules. Not the President,” Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) told HuffPost in a statement.
The order directs the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration to create a list of eligible voters in each state. It also aims to prevent the U.S. Postal Service from sending any absentee ballots to people not on the approved list.
The president is also calling for any mail-in ballots to include unique barcodes and secure envelopes, according to the executive order.
“The cheating on mail-in voting is legendary. It’s horrible what’s going on,” Trump said, repeating his false claims about voter fraud as he signed the order on Tuesday. “I think this will help a lot with elections.”
In response, Democrats promised swift legal challenges, while the secretaries of state of Arizona and Oregon pledged to challenge the order immediately.
The President wants to limit which Americans can participate in our democracy.
California will see him in court. https://t.co/Wb5e35wNm2
Only citizens vote in Arizona elections. That's the law and we'll continue to enforce it. We don't need Washington politicians telling us how to run our elections.
This Executive Order is nothing more than an illegal attack on vote by mail and access to the ballot box. pic.twitter.com/g7TdJ5Us2u
This is unconstitutional. Voting is a fundamental right for every American. Illinois will keep administering free and fair elections – and what Donald Trump puts on a piece of paper will not change that. https://t.co/z6OZZmUUd1
— Governor JB Pritzker (@GovPritzker) March 31, 2026The President's latest Executive Order is another desperate, illegal power grab. The Constitution is clear: states run elections. We don’t need decrees from Washington D.C. My message to the President: we’ll see you in court. pic.twitter.com/mLne0gX561
