Storms have taken over the territory of Goiás. The Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Information of Goiás (Cimehgo) had already issued an alert for heavy rains at the beginning of the week , in the state there are regions where the volume of water exceeded 100mm on Tuesday alone (25).

According to the monitoring agency, Anápolis, which is among the 133 cities on alert for storms, recorded between 26mm and 54mm of rainfall until 8 am. The peak, according to information from the city's Civil Defense, occurred at 2 am with 26.8mm/h. The forecast indicates that the rains will continue throughout the day.

The most worrying situation occurred in Rio Verde, in the Southwest of Goiás. Cimehgo details that 59.6mm of water fell in just 10 minutes. Between 1:50 pm and 2:20 pm this Monday (24) the volume reached 80mm, equivalent to what is expected for six days.

The toll in the municipality was one of destruction to the roofs of schools, health units, urban roads, and vehicles that were on the streets during the rain. For comparison, the last major storm that caused serious damage in Anápolis, including deaths in 2022, recorded 60mm of rain in one hour.

A video sent by listeners of Radio 96FM shows several vehicles nearly submerged on one of Rio Verde's main avenues shortly after the storm.

New information from Cimehgo reveals that the Goiás City Monitoring Network recorded 121mm of rainfall in the headwaters of the Rio Vermelho River up to 9 am on the 25th. The region is on orange alert, with a risk of the river overflowing.

Prognosis

Rain is still forecast for the remainder of the day throughout the state of Goiás. The alert issued by Cimehgo for storms with gusts of wind and the possibility of hail remains valid for 133 cities, including Anápolis. The weather in Goiás is being influenced by a cold front advancing through the Southwest region of Brazil.

Civil Defense advises the public to avoid risky situations and, if necessary, to call emergency services at 193.
