Aurelio Perez-Lugones, a federal contractor with top-secret clearance, was arrested for unlawfully retaining classified military information. This case revolves around Operation Absolute Resolve, a significant military action that targeted Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro on January 3, 2026.

Perez-Lugones, a former Navy veteran, allegedly mishandled sensitive materials related to the operation. Reports indicate that classified items were found in his lunchbox, basement, and vehicle. Notably, the contractor is accused of sharing some of this classified information with Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson. While Natanson has not been charged, federal agents raided her home earlier this year, seizing devices to uncover her sources.

President Trump addressed the situation, stating that “the leaker was found” and now sits in jail. He characterized Perez-Lugones as a “very bad leaker” who would likely face a long sentence. Trump’s comments were echoed by Attorney General Pamela Bondi, who emphasized the gravity of the accusations. Bondi detailed the execution of a search warrant at Natanson’s home and confirmed that the leaker is behind bars. She noted, “The leaker is currently in custody,” stressing the severity of the actions involved.

The FBI’s investigation, led by Director Kash Patel, confirmed the sensitive nature of the information shared. Patel labeled the alleged actions as dangerous, endangering military personnel and compromising national security. During a court hearing, Assistant U.S. Attorney Patricia McLane revealed that Perez-Lugones admitted to mishandling classified materials, linking his actions to anger over the Trump administration’s policies.

Social media reactions highlighted the public’s shock and outrage at Perez-Lugones’ alleged betrayal. One post questioned, “How stupid can he be?” referring to the severe legal consequences he now faces under the Espionage Act, which carries hefty prison sentences for such offenses. Another user lamented, “Isn’t leaking treason?” pointing to the historical weight of leaking classified information, suggesting that past administrations may have dealt with similar cases more stringently.

This incident underscores significant concerns about national security and illuminates the broader consequences of unauthorized disclosures within the defense sector. The intensity of federal actions demonstrates a firm stance against government employees who breach their oath and compromise information. The pursuit of accountability is crucial in maintaining the integrity of America’s military operations and safeguarding national interests.
