Lame-duck House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) bowed to President Donald Trump on X Tuesday despite losing his speakership in a Democratic landslide.

Johnson won another term for his House seat in the midterm election. But the president’s plea for voters to choose as if he were on the ballot failed miserably, stripping the loyal Johnson of his gavel come January. (Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) is likely to become the new speaker.)

“Over the past two years, House Republicans have worked alongside President Donald Trump to deliver massive wins for the American people, including secured borders, permanently lower taxes, and safer streets,” the Louisiana lawmaker wrote on X. “We left it all on the field in this midterm to continue building on those accomplishments.”

He then tried to rev up the base with fearmongering that Republicans leaned on before their disaster.

“While the outcome of this midterm is not what we’d hoped and fought for, a new battle is just beginning,” he wrote. “This Democrat House majority will be led by the most radical and extreme leftists in American history. However, Republicans will never stop fighting to defend the Constitution and protect the foundations that have made America the greatest nation in the history of the world.”

He added: “We will continue pressing forward with our agenda of common sense, and our vision to make America great again—and come 2028, we WILL take back the House and we will finish the job.”

Many observers weren’t impressed, pointing to the speaker’s unwavering devotion to the president in the wake of the GOP’s collective flop. Not to mention Johnson’s repeated claims that the polls were wrong and that Republicans would hang on to the House.

“You let the President go to war, make millions off that war and you protected men and women who rape children,” one person wrote. “What did you expect?”

Another called him an “azz licker,” whose plane-riding days with “diaper donnie” are over.

One poster wrote “Still true today!” while sharing an old video of Liz Cheney warning Trump sycophants, “There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.”
