President Donald Trump and several White House officials have gone after Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) since he criticized Trump and the administration at a campaign rally on Sunday. But political experts argue that these attacks have more to do with distraction and deviation than with actual offense at the comment.

Ossoff had condemned Trump’s handling of the economy and the Iran conflict, and then claimed that the president “doesn’t want to do the job; he wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie,” referring to White House aide Natalie Harp.

“Jon Jackoff has to be the biggest cuck loser in politics,” Steven Cheung, the White House director of communications, posted on Monday in response to a clip. “He’s a radical, extremist Dumocrat.”

Within 10 minutes of Cheung posting, White House spokesman Davis Ingle wrote on X that Ossoff was “a cringeworthy, feminine theatre kid cosplaying as Barack Obama.”

While speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday afternoon, Trump dismissed CNN reporter Kristen Holmes for asking him about Ossoff’s comments, and referred to Ossoff as “Pee-Wee Herman.”

Andrew Frank, the founder and CEO of the crisis communications firm KARV and a former political appointee in the Clinton administration, told HuffPost that these attack responses deflect from the policy points Ossoff raised and redirect media attention toward more interpersonal drama. It’s a tactic Trump has been doing on the political scene for years.

“When there are scandals, that’s when Trump has made some of his most ... personalized attacks,” Frank said. “It’s a form of distraction because it sucks off attention from the media instead of talking about policies.”

Ossoff’s main accusations against the Trump administration are being left out of the conversation.

What has not been addressed are Ossoff’s other comments from the speech, in which he accused the administration of lying the nation into “another reckless war,” draining munitions and oil reserves, failing to bring down consumer prices, and insider trading around tariffs.

When MSNBC host Jen Psaki asked why he invoked Harp in the speech, Ossoff said, “We’re in wartime; the commander-in-chief has mired us in this geopolitical disaster. People have lost their lives, our naval logistics are frayed, the global energy system is in crisis — and he retreats into this bubble of West Wing aides who are his security blanket to make him feel good about himself.”

Ossoff did not respond to HuffPost’s request for comment as of publishing.

The reaction against Ossoff is particularly personal because his quip poked at an inner-circle aide, which essentially challenges Trump’s leadership skills.

“This is a sensitive spot,” Frank said. “I’m not surprised they don’t want to talk about issues that he’s underwater with.”

The White House officials’ insulting language in particular reflects gendered political tropes designed to take down potential opponents rather than engage with their arguments.

“Jon Ossoff is a feminine theatre kid who voted to massively raise taxes, give illegal immigrants free taxpayer-funded healthcare, and defund federal immigration enforcement and Border Patrol,” Ingle told HuffPost. “Lightweight Jon’s rhetoric is cringeworthy, but his extreme voting record is dangerous. Natalie Harp is one of the most loyal and hardest-working aides on President Trump’s team.”

Political psychologist Thomas Zeitzoff told HuffPost that this aggressiveness is a calculated maneuver that prioritizes base appeal over general likability. Trump’s current approval rating is around 33%, the lowest of his second term.

“When you do this kind of politics, you sacrifice likability,” Zeitzoff said. “But it shows that this person is a fighter — and that’s what Trump’s base likes about him, that he fights.”

The personal attacks could be fueled by Ossoff’s power in a swing state.

The administration’s counterattack could also be targeting Ossoff so aggressively because he is running for reelection in Georgia, a swing state, against Republican Mike Collins.

“[Ossoff] is running in a purple-ish state,” Zeitzoff said. “They want to target him and perhaps use this to … try to energize Republican voters in Georgia.”

Ossoff could pose a greater threat to the Trump administration in the future, which may be a factor they are considering when insulting him — although nothing is confirmed. “They see him as somebody in 2028 who could be a Democratic primary candidate, could very well be a presidential candidate,” Zeitzoff said.
