Did you like what happened to you when you were five, or ten, or fifteen? No. Then why did you choose to keep it? Michael Singer asks everyone this. It is already over, and you decided that because you didn't like it, you would hold on to it. Tami Simon asks whether his teaching is a form of spiritual bypassing, and he says it is literally the opposite. Bypassing is when something difficult comes up and you refuse to deal with it, so you wear white clothes, serve, do things that look spiritual while inside it is anything but. What he teaches is that you don't go down to it, you let it come up to you, and you let it pass through. That is what a samskara is: not a memory, which comes and goes freely, but a thing that came in, hit you wrong, and didn't make it through because you pushed it away. He credits Freud for bringing that to the surface, enlightened or not. Energy has to keep moving, and the only way energy can move and stay in one place is in a circle, so what you resisted is still circling inside you. Every one of those blockages is blocking the light, and every one of them, no matter how dark or how old, turns into light as you let it go. Darkness, as Yogananda said, is only the absence of light. Eventually, he says, you catch on. Come and get it. You want a piece of me? Take it. Because real purification doesn't mean you don't swear. It means you don't have a lot of stuff in there.
