We usually think of compassion as something we extend outward, to other people, especially the ones who are easy to love. But Pema Chödrön teaches that real compassion begins much closer to home. You cannot be truly compassionate to others until you have learned to be compassionate to yourself. You cannot pour from a cup you have never filled.
