A ruthless ruler unifies China, cheats death with a clay army, and leaves a tomb still sealed. This is the First Emperor's rise, legalist rule, and quest for immortality. Empire Games retraces the road from the debated Xia to Shang oracle bones and Zhou statecraft, before a chaotic Warring States era births thinkers like Confucius and Sun Tzu. See how iron weapons, crossbows and mass conscription turned warfare into long, grinding campaigns that scarred civilians. Into this storm emerges the Qin ruler who crowns himself First Emperor, imposes legalism, bans historical texts under Chancellor Li Tsai, and survives multiple assassination attempts, including the failed strike by blind musician Gao Jianli. Punishments are severe, even extending guilt to three generations. Obsessed with security and the afterlife, he orders walls in the north against the Xiongnu and forces hundreds of thousands into labor. He chases elixirs, then builds an afterlife empire: a vast tomb complex rediscovered by a farmer in 1974, guarded by some 8,000 life-size terracotta warriors with real weapons, chariots and horses, their once vivid colors lost on exposure. Concubines and attendants follow him into death, while the inner burial chamber remains unopened today. The emperor dies at 49; within five years the Qin collapses as famine, harsh laws and succession strife erode the Mandate of Heaven. Yet his centralization and standards seed later Chinese power. Why is the tomb still sealed? Archaeologists caution that preservation must come first, and debate continues around politics and legend. Empire Games brings the research, discoveries and enduring questions to life.
