'Despicable': Critics Rip Trump Over 'Beyond Sickening' Oval Office Moment

Critics are calling out President Donald Trump for defending Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman when asked about the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

“He knew nothing about it, and we can leave it at that,” Trump said on Tuesday as he scolded reporters during the Oval Office meeting with MBS. “You don’t have to embarrass our guest by asking a question like that.”

He also suggested that Khashoggi may have had it coming.

“You’re mentioning somebody that was extremely controversial,” he said. “A lot of people didn’t like that gentleman that you’re talking about. Whether you like him or didn’t like him, things happened.”

Khashoggi was murdered at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, on Oct. 2, 2018. The CIA at the time ― which was then part of the first Trump administration ― concluded with “high confidence” that the crown prince orchestrated the killing, after which Khashoggi’s body was cut up with a bone saw so it could be stealthily taken out of the consulate.

MBS has denied knowledge or involvement.

But Trump’s defense of him and the president’s attack on the media for even asking about the killing left observers livid.

They fired back on X:

Defending MBS while disparaging a man who was ruthlessly executed under his watch is beyond sickening, even for Trump.

It's a serious disgrace to see the President of the United States roll out the red carpet for a foreign dictator who ordered the killing of a Washington Post journalist. https://t.co/hpbKGNxCyB

Here's an American president telling a member of the U.S. media not to ask about how his "guest" had a journalist dismembered for warning the world about his fake reformer reputation. https://t.co/BhbyrQymEO

I knew and admired Jamal Khashoggi, a true Saudi patriot who hoped for a freer nation. It's painful to see President Trump suggest that because Jamal was "controversial," he somehow merited being murdered and dismembered, with Saudi Arabia still refusing to return his remains. https://t.co/PbCDx0pbva

“things happen” = burning risotto, breaking a vase, forgetting a friend's birthday

“things happen” ≠ violently murdering and dismembering a journalist in a consulate https://t.co/7iO8mdBksT

I don't know what's worse -- dismissing the murder of a journalist with "things happen," or saying that MBS "knew nothing about it."

Trump's own administration reported to Congress that MBS was responsible for killing Khashoggi. https://t.co/eEXbRVyBZk
