While speaking at the National Urban League’s annual conference in Nashville on Friday, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear strongly hinted that he is indeed considering a White House bid in 2028.

Beshear joined former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg — another potential 2028 hopeful — for discussions that largely centered on race and urban issues. In one standout moment relating to his potential aspirations, the Democrat governor was asked about the qualities needed for the next leader of the United States.

“Well, I’ll start out by saying I walked off the stage in my re-election in 2023. I looked at my wife and I said, ‘Who I will never have to run for anything ever again.’ And sitting here today, I don’t know that’s true,” he said.

“I will not leave a broken country to my kids or to anyone else’s kids. And while the United States was never perfect and and and hopefully we were moving in the right direction where we have parts of our past that we shouldn’t be hiding, we should be admitting and then adopting policies to make sure that we can make up uh for the mistakes that that we’ve made,” the governor continued. “Our kids deserve so much better than they’re getting right now. I’ll say this. Um, if people are looking for the Democratic version of Donald Trump, that ain’t me. And if that’s what they’re looking for, I’m I’m okay that it’s not me. I think we have to fight hard. I think we have to win, but we have to have somebody that can bring this country back together again.”

The interviewer then remarked that Beshear appears to be considering a presidential bid, stating that he seemingly has a “circle around January 20th, 2029” on his calendar. “Maybe so,” the governor answered plainly.

Beshear has long been discussed as a potential national candidate for an extended period. Following his 2023 reelection, his name appeared in conversations about possible Democratic Party running mates for the 2024 presidential ticket.

As chair of the Democratic Governors Association, he has focused on supporting Democratic candidates in gubernatorial races ahead of the 2026 midterms, noting that success in those contests could affect the electoral map in subsequent years.

Additional activities have included travel to states with early primary or caucus contests, such as South Carolina, where he participated in party events and discussed national issues. He has appeared at gatherings including the National Action Network convention, where similar remarks about not ruling out future races were made.
