Political leaders in Aberdeen have joined forces to condemn "disgraceful" incidents of workers being threatened while taking down flags to put up Christmas lights.

Flags, including the Saltire, have been hung on lampposts in Scotland in recent months amid concerns over immigration.

Aberdeen City Council said flags are being removed from lighting columns that are being used to hang festive lights to ensure the decorations can be installed safely.

The local authority's political group leaders said they have been left "appalled" by recent incidents where workers carrying out this work were subjected to verbal threats.

SNP councillor Christian Allard, Scottish Conservative councillor Richard Brooks, Scottish Labour councillor M Tauqeer Malik and Scottish Liberal Democrat councillor Ian Yuill are urging people to show respect towards those putting up the lights - and report any incidents of threatening behaviour to police.

In a joint statement, they said: "The installation of Christmas lights is a council-approved initiative designed to bring joy and celebration to residents and visitors alike.

"Our contracted teams are carrying out essential work and deserve to do so in a safe and respectful environment.

"Threatening or obstructive behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Incidents have been reported to Police Scotland, and enforcement action will be supported where necessary.

"This behaviour is disgraceful and completely unacceptable. Our workers are doing their job to make Aberdeen a brighter, more welcoming city for everyone.

"They deserve respect and protection, not intimidation."

The councillors said they would work closely with Police Scotland to "ensure the safety of our staff".

The local authority said it is an offence to install flags on council property without permission. It plans to remove flags, as it would any item attached to a lamppost, without the relevant permissions.
