The White Cross Project brought 3,000 white crosses to Washington, D.C., honoring people identified by organizers as victims of farm attacks in South Africa. The two-day vigil on the National Mall follows a conference at the National Press Club featuring survivors and advocates discussing farm attacks, property rights, race-based legislation and minority rights in South Africa. The organizers say the event is intended to draw attention to what they describe as persecution and discrimination against Afrikaners and other minority communities. A documentary produced by Lex Libertas, “Crossed Out: Confronting Persecution in South Africa,” was also screened at the White House on September 24 as part of the White Cross Project events. South African officials and other Afrikaner organizations have disputed claims that white farmers are being subjected to political persecution, arguing that the White Cross Project presents a misleading picture of conditions in the country.
